Lots of Activities at the Maplewood, MO JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts Store

I’ve been having lots of fun and keeping busy since I joined the teaching team at the JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts store in the Deer Creek Shopping Center in Maplewood, MO. Last weekend we were having a rubber stamping and paper sale, so I came in to demonstrate how to make greeting cards with rubber stamps. On my demo table I also showed some products that are good for card-making and in the shadow box are samples of upcoming classes that I will be teaching. My upcoming classes include Kid’s Hand Sewn Initial Letter, Kid’s Beaded Wish Bracelets, Make an Art Journal, Easy Button Bracelet and Kid’s Hand Sewn Bee Art. Go to my Classes and Events page for my schedule of classes and demos.

My own sewing skills can always use improving, so I took the Comfy Pants class from instructor Miss Kate. I had a great time and made my first ever handmade clothing item (unless you count the Barbie doll clothes I made when I was young). I did a lot of sewing when I was a kid but I was afraid to use a sewing machine and did not learn how until I was around 40 years old. I have done some sewing on a machine but I sewed simple things made from my own patterns such as table runners, scarves, fabric pouches, laundry bags, pillows and the like. Making clothing from a commercial pattern was something I had never done before and I’m thrilled to learn how to take my sewing to the next level! Kate knows a ton of things about making high-end clothing or simple clothing like my new Route 66 themed pajama pants!

Upcoming class: Mosaic Plant Stand

Mosaic Plant StandI hope you can join me on June 18, 2016 as we make a mosaic plant stand! Build an attractive and sturdy stand for plant pots or other decorative objects while learning the basics of building a wood frame to contain mosaic tiles. You’ll learn how to set, grout and seal the tiles so your stand will hold up to outdoor use. You will also learn how to attach wooden feet to your stand. This project is a good introduction for those who would later like to make larger projects such as tables and shelves.

Classes are designed so that each participant will complete one project during the class. Each class attendee will recieve a printout with a written tutorial for that class so if you forget anything we learned you can refer back to it later. For details about what is included in each class and what if anything to bring, click the links below.

NEW! At each class, there will be at least one door prize randomly awarded to an attendee – probably a craft supply item of some type that relates to the theme of the class. Past prizes have included a necklace kit, a polymer clay frame kit and a craft stencil. That’s my way of saying thank you for coming!

Upcoming Class at Studio:art – Polymer Clay Pendant with Glass Embellishment

Polymer Clay Pendant with Glass Embellishment

I hope you can join me for my next class at Studio:art! You will learn how to make a pendant out of polymer clay textured with a rubber stamp enhanced with a glass embellishment. You will have a choice of color schemes you can use. Then you will learn how to make a finished necklace so you can wear your pendant. All supplies are included in the class fee – clay, pigments, glass, images, stringing materials and jewelry findings. The beads provided may not be exactly the same as shown in my sample but they will be close enough to create a similar look.

Tools will be available for you to borrow and some tools will be available to purchase should you want to continue working on your own later. You will not need to purchase anything additional to make the class project during class. If you have deep-etched rubber stamps of a texture design, special beads you want to use or any special images you want to include on the pendant you can bring them but there will be sufficient supplies to use if you don’t bring any.

The class time of 11-5 might sound daunting but there will be a lunch break and possibly more shorter breaks if we need them. The pendants will need to be baked twice during the class and I built in some extra time for baking and breaks. There are a lot of good places to eat in Maplewood that are within walking distance of the studio plus there is a Shop ‘n Save right across the street if you want to pick up a deli sandwich or a salad or something. The last class I scheduled for this length of time finished up a little early but I can’t guarantee that this one will also finish early.

NEW! In each class there will be door prize of some kind of supply or tool that relates to the class subject. You might win some extra supplies!

If you have any questions about the class please feel free to contact me.
